In October, Design 101 was all about lighting. We kicked off the month by asking our readers to submit a lighting dilemma they had at home so that we could help come up with a lighting solution. Thanks to all of you who submitted your lighting dilemmas and ideas, we loved hearing from you! Below is the followup on the project we selected.
"S" has recessed lights over her kitchen island and would like to replace them with pendants.
We suggest installing the new pendants in the same location of the current lights to minimize the amount of construction. As we discussed in our Design 101 posting about how to light every room in your home, kitchen pendants should be hung 30-40" from your countertop. In this case, we suggest a hanging height of 36" above the countertop so that the pendants are hung a total of 72" from the floor. This will prevent anyone from banging a head into them when sitting on the bar stools.
